Biotechnology is a collection of technologies using cells and biological molecules. Today we can manipulate organisms at the molecular level via genes. Owing to extraordinary specificity of cells and molecules, the tools and techniques of biotechnology are quite precise and are tailored to operate in known, predictable ways. As a result, the products of biotechnology are being targeted to solve specific problems having fewer unintended consequences. Today important thrust areas are Fermentation, Plant and Animal Cell & Tissue Culture, recombinant DNA technology, Antisense technology, Protein engineering technology, Monoclonal antibody technology, Biosensor technology, DNA fingerprinting and diagnostic techniques, Bioinformatics, Biodegradation.
M.Sc Biotechnology course is spread over four semesters in two years. The first year consists of fundamental a basic course followed by applied subjects in final year, both theoretical and practical aspects of all major thrust areas are covered in the degree program. It is noteworthy that each thrust area is supported by relevant practical/laboratory sessions and thus provides ample hands-on training to students. Industrial visits are integral part of teaching to acquaint students with practical knowledge in the field.,
Two academic years. Each year divided into 2 semesters (4 semesters in total).
B.Sc. degree of Bangalore University or any other University equivalent thereto with 50% marks (45% marks for SC/ST/Cat-I) in all three optionals in aggregate. The applicant should have studied

75% attendance is a must for registering for the Bangalore University examination.
The academic and extra academic activities of the course program revolves around the conduction of theory & practical classes using OHP/LCD slides, other audio-visual aids based multi media tools, invited guest lectures/lead talks, workshops and industrial/institutional visits. Apart from these, the department organizes symposia, intra/inter-collegiate literary competitions and provides encouragement for participation and presentations in conferences and seminars in thrust area of Biotechnology.
Each theory paper is valued for 20 marks and each practical paper is valued for 10 marks for InternalAssessment.Assessment is based on the performance of the student in tests, quiz, assignments/charts/models, seminars, attendance, punctuality, interaction relating to subjects during class hours, practical work in laboratory and the overall performance.
As per Bangalore University regulations.
Students can carryover to next higher semester subject to the fulfilment of attendance requirement.
